Research Project "Mulsim Milieus in Austria"

Although there are approximately half a million muslims living in Austria, there is hardly any scientific research which focuses on the diversity of muslim livelihood and the different religious practices. The study "Muslim Milieus in Austria" seeks to close this gap.

The public perception and the media discourse in Austria are charecterized by the misleading conception, that muslims are a homogenous part of the Austrian society who practice their beliefs in the same way. The predominant stereotype has it, that every muslim is devout, strictly obeys the five pillars of Islam and visits the mosque every friday.

This study aims to correct this wrong image by capturing the various ways of how Islam is practiced and by showing the different backgrounds and livelihoods of muslims in Austria.
